About

Welcome to Arete Physiotherapy

Arete is an ancient greek word meaning excellence or virtue, being the best one can be. The arete of something is the highest quality that can be reached. We have named the clinic ‘Arete Physiotherapy’ to illustrate our commitment to provide excellence in all that we do and to help all of our clients achieve excellence in your own lives. As athletes ourselves, we have a great appreciation for the impact that injuries can have on your quality of life. You will find us sympathetic but motivating, compassionate and driven as we help you to achieve your goals.

Anne Wilson
Physiotherapist

The clinic is headed by Anne Wilson, she has 20 years experience in private practice and has worked with a very diverse range of clients. Anne was the physio for the Ranfurly Shield Winning Otago ITM Rugby Team in 2018 and 2019. As a mother, athlete and physiotherapist she strives to be the best that she can be in everything she does. Anne takes pride in and loves her work and considers it a great privilege to be trusted with the rehabilitation of each of her clients.

Alyssa Grant
Physiotherapist

My name is Alyssa, and I am the new Physio here at Arete Clinic. My favourite part of the body to treat is the knee as it is the largest joint in the body with a very complex structure and needs to be well supported by the rest of the body otherwise it is highly susceptible to injury.

I use the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) which looks at full body movement patterns and helps me identify all the potential causes of your pain, without overlooking anything. This ensures your rehab is tailored specifically to you and respects the fact that the body functions as a whole.I also use the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) which is used for people who are not injured or in pain but wish to enhance their performance in sport and activity or minimise risk of injury. This screen identifies any deficits in seven fundamental movement patterns that are prevalent in everyday life and guides me to create a program that restores adequate movement competency.

Alyssa is also skilled in dry needling and manual techniques.

Kate Hearn
Physiotherapist

Kate graduated from James Cook University in Australia in 2009 and has worked in musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy private practices ever since. She moved to Queenstown in 2014 and made the shift to Dunedin in late 2023 in hopes of cheaper house prices!

Kate enjoys finding the asymmetries and “weak links” in the biomechanical chain which can contribute to injuries, and has a background working in clinical Pilates studios in Australia. She likes working with people to get them back doing what they like to do, as well as developing plans for injury prevention. Kate has also completed a Yoga teacher training and believes in addressing the whole person rather than just the body part.

Kate has had involvement in high level field hockey in the past and continues to keep active outside work hours with trail running, mountain biking, rock climbing, and backcountry splitboarding in winter.
